There is no fuel, water or power out here, so treat the townsite as a day trip from a base back west.
Elephant Butte Lake State Park: West in Elephant Butte and the nearest developed camping, with showers, an emptying point and a mix of powered and full service pitches. Boat ramps remain shut for low water.
Dam Site Recreation Area: Also in Elephant Butte, beside the 1916 dam, offering camping, a historic lodge and a store.
Caballo Lake State Park: South in Caballo, where four loops ring the reservoir and Palomino handles emptying.
Percha Dam State Park: Farther south, still in Caballo, a quiet riverside stop with roughly three miles of walking trails.

What Is There to See and Do at Engle?
Engle is a ghost town, and what is left is the point: a 1909 adobe schoolhouse, a scatter of buildings, working freight tracks and a very long view across the Jornada del Muerto. The Camino Real crossed here, and a Bureau of Land Management interpretive trail sits south on Upham Road. Nothing is staffed and nothing is for sale. Fuel and water before you leave Truth or Consequences, and expect little or no phone signal.
Which RV Rental Works for an Engle Day Trip?
You can hire a Class B camper van, a Class C or Class A motorhome, or a small travel trailer or large bunkhouse trailer, and longer term arrangements are possible. Listings move as bookings arrive. For Engle the sensible pattern is to leave the rig at the lake campground and drive out on New Mexico 51 in a smaller vehicle, because the townsite offers nowhere to connect, turn easily or refuel. Should you prefer to take the rental itself, New Mexico 51 is sealed the whole way east from Truth or Consequences, but the county road continuing south past the spaceport is not, and that stretch is no place for a hired vehicle.
